Course 1 · Beginner Students

Painted by students, under Anne-Marie's tutelage

These are just some of the paintings created by students during Course 1. Not everyone shares their work, no matter how gently, or how often, they are encouraged to, so what you see here is only a small window into the studio. Behind every painting shown are many more, quietly finished at kitchen tables and in candlelit corners.

Almost every student arrived nervous. Some had never held a brush in their lives and were convinced they could not draw a straight line, let alone paint. Others came from Anne-Marie's spirit portrait art mentorship and wanted to soften their work with water and pigment. Others still were entirely new to Anne-Marie's teaching, joining for the first time, and offered warm, generous verbal feedback on the experience once the evenings were over.

What changed was not their talent. It was their fear.

They first learnt the foundations that prepare them for Course 2. They learnt the basics of water control, what is meant by a wash and how each one differs, and how to correct painting mistakes using water and tissue, plus a great deal more. Using those foundation methods, they painted their first step-by-step paintings. Now the students are ready and equipped to move on to Course 2: they understand the terminology, and they are ready to paint.  - If you missed Course 1 Foundations, you can book a private session 1:1.
